Purpose
The rapidly increasing interest in art in Washington and the proliferation of new art businesses have resulted in a correlative focus on the importance of the role of the responsible art dealer. It is the dealer who usually discovers and exhibits the work of emerging artists. It is by the dealer's effort that such artists are brought to the attention of collectors, museum curators, and the public.
Dealers' exhibitions, which are generally open free to the public, are among the most important cultural contributions to the city. Each of the members of the Washington Art Dealers Association is an experienced and knowledgeable professional in the category of art he or she sells, and warrants the confidence of the community.
Membership
The selection of new members begins by application to or invitation from the Association's board of directors, after consultation with the entire membership. For membership consideration, a dealer must meet the following requirements:
- The gallery has been operational for a minimum of four years.
- The dealer maintains a good reputation for honesty and integrity in its relationship with artists, other dealers, and the public.
- The gallery provides an unconditional guarantee for the precise authenticity
of all works offered for sale.
- In the opinion of two-thirds of the Association's membership, the gallery has established itself as a true "art dealer" rather than merely a retailer in pictures, and, as such, has been and continues to make a significant contribution to the cultural life of Washington, D.C., by the nature of works offered for sale, worthwhile exhibitions, and informative catalogs or other publications.
Activities
In addition to holding regular meetings, its participation in a variety of art fairs, and publishing our own quarterly newsletter, the Washington Art Dealers Association has sponsored the following activities:
1991 "Artist/Dealer Exchange and Discussions," Washington Project for the Arts
1992 Smithsonian Resident Associates lecture series:
